Rogues Gallery Rogues Gallery is within the Rubble Creek Landslide Hazard Area, a cabinet-level provincial land designation of 1980 that effectively bars any development and will not sanction human presence within the defined area (formerly called the Garibaldi Civil Defence Zone). The province’s fear is that the Garibaldi Lake Barrier may collapse in an earthquake and a massive landslide into the Cheakamus River would wash Squamish away to Vancouver Island. To date, and despite a geotechnical report commissioned by the SAS and CASBC -- The Rogues Gallery Risk Analysis Report -- which brought forward new findings that debunked the province’s position in regards to recreation in the area; MOT have refused to give the area any official recognition despite the fact that the crags are above the at-risk area. This exclusion policy flies in the face of common sense for transient recreationalists such as rockclimbers, kayakers, and sunbathers at nearby Lucille Lake. In the case of rockclimbers, it is only parking that is in the alleged at-risk zone, not the crags. However, we have been given to understand from MOT that when construction is complete there are no plans to install physical roadside barriers below Rogues, and as before, climbers will be free to take their chances that the Barrier will not collapse when they arrive, grab their packs, and head uphill to climb. |
